Diamond Vocabulary Foldable

Here is a foldable you can use for any class, as all classes will have new vocabulary students will be expected to learn. I learned how to make this diamond sheet at a professional development meeting on foldables many years ago when I was a new teacher. This easy foldable makes a great graphic organizer for reviewing key concepts or unit vocabulary. It is also good activity to assign to ESL students learning a new topic. I like it best for topics that have four vocabulary terms you want students to focus on. If you have more than four terms in mind, you would just have them do a second diamond sheet.

 Diamond Definition Examples:

•  Phases of Mitosis: Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, Telophase

•  Blood Components: Red Blood Cells, White Blood Cells, Platelets, Plasma

•  Biological Molecules of Life: Carbohydrates, Lipids, Proteins, Nucleic Acids

•  Genetics: Genotype, Phenotype, Homozygous Genotype, Heterozygous Genotype

•  Cellular Respiration: Glycolysis, Fermentation, Kreb's Cycle, Electron Transport Chain

•  Cells: Unicellular, Multicellular, Prokaryote, Eukaryote

• Water Properties: Cohesion, Adhesion, Surface Tension, Capillary Action

A diamond sheet foldable can be used for a:

• Homework assignment

• After notes in class assignment

• Extra credit assignment.

How to make it:

 1.  Fold a blank white paper in half "hamburger style".

Step 1

2.  Fold it in half a second time to make it smaller, also "hamburger style".

Step 2

3.  Take the closed side and bend one of the corners to make a triangle (Make sure

     you do not bend the corner at the opened side (end), or it won’t turn out right).

Step 3

4.  Now open the foldable and there will be a diamond shape in the middle of the paper. The

     bigger your fold was, the bigger the diamond will be. In the middle of the diamond,

     students will write the four terms you give them. You can outline the lines that were made

when you folded it using a ruler and a pen, pencil or marker. This will make the diamond

shape stand out more and make the foldable look more presentable.

Step 4- The bigger the fold, the bigger the diamond, best for students who write big.

A diamond foldable with a smaller fold, makes a smaller diamond.

For each word that is in part of the diamond, students will write these three things in the sectioned off space next to it:

• A definition (Using their own words)

• A sentence using the word (In a way that shows the student knows the meaning of the word).

• A picture that represents the word; colored and labeled.

 When students are finished writing on their diamond foldable, they can fold it up and place in

 their notebook.
